Rich: Stronger in His Fifties, Without Trying to “Outrun Age”

When Running Wasn’t Enough Anymore

Rich didn’t come to GB1fitness chasing a new identity.

He came because something honest clicked into place: What used to work wasn’t enough anymore.

Running had been his “health anchor” since his early forties, but as the years stacked up, the effort started costing more and paying back less.

Not in a dramatic, end-of-the-road way.

Just in that familiar way people hit in their fifties, when you realise fitness isn’t only about getting your heart rate up, it’s about keeping your body capable.

“I started running in my early forties to get a bit healthier, but as I got older, I got slower, and I realised that now in my fifties, I needed something more, geared towards strength and core.”

The Nerves Before the First Class

Yet, even when you know what you need, there’s still the hesitation.

The classic “I’ll do it soon” loop.

The quiet worry that you’ll be the one person who doesn’t fit.

Rich had heard about the classes.

He’d delayed it.

Not because he didn’t want to improve, but because stepping into something new when you’re not sure you belong feels like voluntarily walking into a spotlight.

“I had heard about Graeme’s classes, but had been putting it off, as I wasn’t sure if it was for me, but I took the plunge and booked up.”

He chose a Monday morning for a reason.

That’s not random.

That’s strategy.

It’s the “less eyes on me” slot.

The “let me figure this out quietly” slot.

The “I’m brave, but I’m not pretending I’m not nervous” slot.

“I purposely booked a Monday morning slot, as I was really nervous!”

What happened next is why people stay.

Not the perfect workout.

Not the magical plan.

Not some overhyped promise.

It was the simple reality of being welcomed, shown what to do, and not made to feel stupid for being new.

And that first session didn’t feel like an audition.

It felt like an introduction.

“Graeme welcomed me and showed me the ropes (literally!) and I never looked back.”

Why the Group Made the Difference

From there, it became consistent.

Two classes a week.

Enough to build momentum, but not so much it becomes another life-stressor.

And the win wasn’t just fitness.

It was confidence.

It was structure.

It was knowing that even if the weather is grim and work has drained you, there’s still a session waiting, with people who make it easier to show up.

Rich talks about the group for a reason, because most people don’t struggle with knowing what to do.

They struggle with doing it alone, repeatedly, forever.

The group removes the mental negotiating.

You arrive, you get told what’s happening, you crack on.

You’re supported.

You’re guided.

You’re not guessing.

“I like the group atmosphere, and there’s no way I would be able to do these sessions on my own.”

Forty Sessions Later: Stronger, Fitter, Part of the Community

That’s the bit new people need to hear: You don’t need to be confident first.

You don’t need to be “fit enough” first.

You don’t need to be the loud one, the fast one, the strong one.

You just need to start. 👉 FREE 8-Day GB1 Experience

Because 40 sessions later, you’re not the same person who nervously booked a Monday morning slot hoping nobody would notice.

You’re someone who belongs, someone who’s learned, someone who’s built fitness that actually supports life.

“I have now completed 40 sessions, and on each one, I have learned something new and made lots of new friends, and joined a great community of like minded people.”

If you’re reading this and thinking, “That’s me. I know I need strength, but I’m not sure I’m the GB1fitness type…”That’s exactly where Rich started.
