Training With Purpose
Reaching 100 GB1fitness classes is a milestone at any age.
For Cathi, now in her 70s, it represents a clear decision to prioritise strength, health and consistency.
Her focus wasn’t aesthetic or performance driven, but centred on maintaining muscle tone and supporting bone strength as she gets older.
“As you get older, you lose muscle tone and your bones need strengthening, so I was focussed on improving these things.”
She had tried many different types of fitness over the years but never found anything that truly stuck.
This time felt different because the training felt purposeful, manageable and relevant to her life.

Why Outdoor Training Worked
One of the biggest changes for Cathi was training outside rather than in a gym.
The open-air environment felt more natural and far less intimidating, even when conditions were challenging.
“I found that working out in the open air really suited me, even though it is tough when your fingers and toes get cold sometimes in winter!”
GB1fitness sessions became something she looked forward to rather than something she felt she should do. Combined with swimming once a week and walking almost every day, her routine became balanced and sustainable rather than all-or-nothing.

Strength Through Balance
Cathi’s progress hasn’t come from extremes.
It has come from consistency and balance.
Strength training supports muscle tone and bone health, while regular walking and swimming maintain mobility and cardiovascular fitness.
This approach has allowed her to keep moving, improving and showing up week after week, which is exactly how long-term strength is built.

Community During a Difficult Year
The past year has been incredibly hard for Cathi.
She has experienced significant personal loss, losing people she loved deeply.
“The last year or so has been very difficult for me as I have lost some of the people I love best in the world.”
During that time, the role of community became even more important.
Training sessions provided familiarity, routine and human connection when life felt unsteady.

More Than Just Exercise
GB1fitness offered Cathi more than physical training.
The encouragement, shared effort and humour made turning up easier, especially on difficult days.
“I am sure that the support, camaraderie and even the banter at fitness class has helped to keep my spirits up.”
Her 100 classes represent resilience, quiet determination and the power of showing up even when life is challenging.
Cathi’s Friday Fire is a reminder that strength training isn’t about age, comparison, or perfection. I
t’s about maintaining independence, building resilience, and having the right support around you when life is challenging.
If you’re thinking about adding strength, structure and community to your routine, GB1fitness offers supportive outdoor training designed to help you stay strong at every stage of life.
